Live entertainment

Jay Malinowski of Bedouin Soundclash returns to Base31, bringing his powerful songwriting and unmistakable voice back to the stage. After performing in our inaugural season at the Drill Hall, Malinowski now returns for a more intimate performance in the Sergeants Mess Hall—an atmospheric space perfectly suited for his latest musical evolution.
A testament to the power of his songwriting, Malinowski’s music has been covered by Sturgill Simpson, Frank Turner, Diplo, The Interrupters and Grandson. He has collaborated with artists ranging from Preservation Hall Jazz Band, to Philly House legend King Britt, to Darryl Jennifer of D.C. hardcore pioneers Bad Brains

“Under A Landslide of Stars” is Malinowski’s first record under his new moniker “MALINOWSKI” and is a sonic exploration of his passion for soaring anthemic harmonies and hymns. The album enlists choirs from all over the continent: from gospel singers in New Orleans featuring the work of Rick Nelson (Afghan Whigs/Twilight Singers) and Clint Maedgen (Preservation Hall Jazz Band) to a 150 person community choir recorded live in a church in Victoria, B.C. Canada.

“This album is about love and devotion and how those are so pure on an intimate level and can get so twisted in a larger group,” says Malinowski. “I was reflecting about the deep love I have for my wife and son Finn (Deeper Than Blue, Half-Moon Bay) and then juxtaposing that against fanatical characters I conjured up in my mind that are showing devotion for God in impossibly violent ways (Holy Guns, Die For Love, Son of a Gun) The cosmic absurdity of expressing love through violence is a plot worthy of Camus. But it’s seeing that horrible joke and instead of descending into nihilism, returning to the sacred in the small things.”

The album was recorded at the legendary Armoury Studios in Vancouver and mixed in Los Angeles by Davey Badiuk (Liam Gallagher/Dragonette). “Under A Landslide of Stars” is a sonic journey of intimate and exponential love. “We live in wild, wild times,” smiles Malinowski. “Sometimes I forget the stars above, how immaterial and small it all is under that landslide of stars.
