Meet Sarah

Designer and television personality Sarah Keenleyside shares her favourite ways to spend a winter day in Prince Edward County—with two little adventurers in tow.

Sarah Keenleyside knows a thing or two about making things beautiful. She also knows when to sacrifice fashion for a good pair of winter boots. Sarah’s idea of a perfect winter day involves toboggans, a warming lunch and a little treasure hunting. Her advice to visitors? “Pack proper winter wear, city folk! Fun over fashion always out here.”

Her husband, musician Justin Rutledge, fell for the County long before the two met. Love took him back to Toronto, but eventually brought them both to Picton to raise their family. Now, Sarah's favourite winter haunts offer a glimpse of the County as she knows it—beyond the postcard scenery and the usual online recommendations, into the cosy corners and small rituals that make this place home.

Your Winter Day

1
A Little Caffeine, a Lot of Fresh Air

First things first: coffee. At Beacon Bike + Brew in Picton, bicycle culture meets café culture, complete with an adorable little astroturf play area. Sarah's usual is an Americano misto; Justin orders a cappuccino, Louie is devoted to the fresh croissants, and Jack has a dairy-free carrot cake with his name on it. With the boys happily occupied, the grown-ups might even manage a few uninterrupted sips before heading out into the cold.

Next, they're off to Dunes Beach at Sandbanks Provincial Park, home to the world's largest freshwater baymouth barrier dune formation. Spectacular in any season, the towering dunes take on a different character in winter. Without the beach umbrellas and bathing suits, the landscape takes centre stage: great sweeps of sand or snow, sculpted by the wind, rising and falling beneath the winter sky.

“It's our favourite winter hike,” Sarah says, recommending a walk through the dunes with toboggans in tow for a little downhill adventure on the other side.

266 Wellington Main Street, Canada

After a morning on the dunes, there's nothing quite like settling in beside a roaring fire for lunch. At Midtown Brewing Company in Wellington, the atmosphere is warm, the hearth is welcoming, and the casual vibe, Sarah says, “doesn't make our hat hair feel out of place.”

But it's the thoughtful hospitality that makes Midtown a particular family favourite. With a son who has a severe milk allergy, Sarah appreciates the dairy-free pizza that Neil and his team prepare—and, even more, “the peace of mind of knowing how seriously they take food allergies.”

Wellington Park | Wellington

Lunch may be over, but the boys aren't finished with the great outdoors. Overlooking the water, Wellington Park is home to a magnificent pirate-ship-meets-fortress playground that's sure to fire up their imaginations—and burn off a little more energy before the afternoon's adventures take a more leisurely turn.

The Art of Treasure Hunting

From Wellington, it's on to Bloomfield, where Sarah's designer's eye gets another chance to indulge. Kokito and Kokito North are perennial favourites, with a possible stop at Citizen Frances for what Sarah calls a “mid-day coffee boost.”

But it's County Traders that holds a special appeal for the whole family. “It's hard for me to not go into County Traders when I'm in Bloomfield,” Sarah admits, describing it as “a safe antique shop to explore with children,” where the boys often leave with “a little $5 treasure for their collections.”

6

The Agrarian & Ralph's Meat Market | Picton

With a few treasures tucked away, the family heads back to Picton, stopping at The Agrarian and Ralph's Meat Market to gather provisions for dinner. Then it's home, where Sarah's perfect winter day ends with a simple ritual:

“Come home, light a fire, and thank every life decision that brought us here.”

Of course, one winter weekend is never quite enough. Here are a few more County favourites Sarah keeps up her sleeve—

Bloomfield Public House | Bloomfield — “I always have the most amazing experience there,” Sarah says, urging visitors to not overlook this local favourite.

Wildlings Café | Base31, Picton — An awesome spot on the bustling base for families with young children, offering indoor play and an outdoor Sensory Garden when the weather cooperates.

Slake Brewing | Picton — Small-batch beer, tacos and a seriously spectacular view. Sarah describes the atmosphere as feeling a bit “après ski...without the ski.”

Parsons Brewing Company | Picton — A cosy, beautiful winter haunt, with epic brews, a thoughtful menu, and an outdoor skating rink to make an afternoon of it.

The Eddie's Red Barn Holiday Market | Bloomfield — Local makers, seasonal gifts, mulled wine and food out back. Sarah reckons you could spend an entire day there.

Bloomfield's Annual Lighted Christmas Parade & Community Celebrations — From tree lightings to Santa Claus parades, Sarah loves the small-town festivities, particularly for visitors from big cities. “It's these lovely community events that, well they restore your faith in humanity.”

Sip Saunas & Wander the Spa | Bloomfield — Two ways to warm up and unwind. For a full Nordic spa experience, there's Wander; for something more spontaneous, Sarah recommends Sip Saunas' community sauna and cold plunge sessions.
