Sam Sakr Art

Wellington

Experience/Attraction, Arts

Sam Sakr is an experiential artist who creates emotional expressions reflecting his time and place. His art is a personal narrative that reflects a shared human experience. Having lived on three continents, he brings a global perspective to his work.

He graduated from the Ontario College of Art where he majored in experimental art while studying under Viktor Tinkl, Gustav Weisman and Tom Dean. He continued at OCA as a technical assistant in the printmaking department.

Sam earned his teaching diploma from Queen’s University where his art is still on display in the education building. He has taught several subjects including art and philosophy.

Sam worked as an illustrator, graphic designer, and—in his youth—as a line cook. After art school, he colourized old episodes of McHale’s Navy and Laurel and Hardy films, but always continued making his own art. His paintings have been collected nationally and internationally. He continues to experiment with materials and subject matter.

He has taught printmaking, found-object sculpture, painting and mixed media at both high school and college level.

After retiring from teaching in 2013, Sam returned to the full-time pursuit of his art at the little paradise he found in Wellington. Keeping art accessible has always been his aim.
