Silent Sky by Lauren Gunderson

Shatterbox Theatre presents Silent Sky, a captivating and inspiring play based on the true story of astronomer Henrietta Leavitt. Set in the early 1900s, the story follows Leavitt and her fellow “computers” at the Harvard Observatory—women tasked with analyzing photographic plates of the night sky, meticulously mapping the stars by hand.

As Henrietta pursues her passion for astronomy, she must navigate the limitations placed on women in science at the time. Her groundbreaking discovery—measuring the distance between stars—would go on to transform our understanding of the universe, though her contributions were largely unrecognized in her lifetime.

Filled with warmth, humour, and wonder, Silent Sky explores friendship, ambition, and the enduring human desire to reach beyond what is known. This intimate and thought-provoking production is a celebration of curiosity, perseverance, and the invisible forces that connect us all.
