When the snow falls and the air turns crisp, Prince Edward County transforms into a winter playground. From snowshoeing and cross-country skiing to ice fishing and tobogganing, there’s a wealth of outdoor activities for every adventurer. Step outside, breathe in the fresh air, and let winter in The County inspire your next adventure.

Capture Winter’s Magic Through Photography

There’s no shortage of photo-worthy moments in PEC’s winter wonderland. Whether you're capturing the icy shores of Wellington Beach or the snow-dusted trees at Sandbanks, you’re bound to snap some magical photos. It’s like nature itself put on a show, and you get the front-row seat. So, make sure all your devices are charged and ready—you won’t want to miss these breathtaking winter scenes!

Winter is also one of the best times for birding in Prince Edward County. Snowy owls occasionally visit open fields, while waterfowl gather along unfrozen stretches of shoreline. Bring binoculars and enjoy a peaceful, quiet morning spotting winter wildlife.

Nature Walks for the Soul

Trade in your cooler for a thermos, bundle up to beat the chill, and enjoy the peace and quiet. Winter is a time for reflection, and PEC’s serene nature walks provide the perfect backdrop for solitude. Breathe deeply and enjoy the crisp air as you stroll through forested areas like the icy shores of Wellington Beach, or head to Sandbanks Provincial Park (follow the signs south from Bloomfield and park at the Dunes Trail lot). Sandbanks truly shines in winter with six trails of varying lengths and difficulty. From snow-covered beaches on Dunes Trail to tranquil riverside moments on Cedar Sands, you’ll encounter countless magical “are we in Narnia?” moments. Be sure to visit the Ontario Parks website to learn more about accessing Sandbanks in winter.

Alternatively, appreciate nature’s artistry as it paints ice on the rock faces at the little-visited Little Bluff Conservation Area.

Macaulay Mountain Conservation Area is a great stop for a walk after spending the morning in Picton. Access it from Macaulay Heritage Park. If you want to take a quick look at one of The County’s loveliest community arts projects, check out Birdhouse City on the edge of the conservation area.

Stretching the length of The County, this 46-km trail is as popular in winter as it is in the warmer months. Whether you’re cross-country skiing, fat biking, walking, or snowmobiling, there’s something for everyone on the Millennium Trail.

Want to explore Picton’s natural beauty at your own pace? Nature Ewalks offers a GPS-guided audio walking tour that lets you wander scenic trails while listening to stories about the local landscape, wildlife, and history that make the area so special. The tour is available year-round (conditions permitting) and can be downloaded for just $14.

Pro tip: Turn it into a full day outing by pairing your walk with a stop on Main Street Picton. Grab a coffee, browse the shops, or enjoy a bite to eat - combining nature and local charm in one easy adventure.

Snowshoeing & Winter Hiking Adventures

If you’re eager to embrace the winter weather, there are plenty of ways to get outside and explore. Slip into a snowsuit, hop on the sled, and over the farm fields we go … and the forests, and the trails, and the pastures. Curious about snowshoeing? Head to Sugarbush Vineyards, where you can rent snowshoes for $20 which includes a wine tasting or hot chocolate (weekends only). Or, join a guided 3km snowshoe walk at Three Dog Winery, available on weekends throughout February, which includes snowshoes and a glass of wine. Many activities are weather-dependent, so it’s best to check conditions and contact businesses before heading out.

For cross-country skiing enthusiasts, the Millennium Trail is a must. Whether you're skiing, snowshoeing, or renting a fat tire bike, this 46-km trail offers a perfect winter escape. Just keep in mind that the trail is shared with snowmobilers. The Prince Edward County Trail Riders maintain about 220 km of snowmobile trails, so be sure to get your Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) trail permit before you hit the snow.

If you prefer two wheels, winter fat biking is a great option. The wide tires offer good traction on packed snow, making the Millennium Trail a popular choice for riders. Some local shops rent fat bikes seasonally—just be sure to bundle up and watch for mixed trail use.

Looking for more options? You can also snap on skis or snowshoes at many of The County’s parks and conservation areas. Sandbanks Provincial Park features 10 km of ski and snowshoe trails, while Macaulay Mountain offers 11 km of scenic paths. Keep in mind that trail conditions may vary with the weather, so plan accordingly for your adventure.

Ice Fishing on the Bay of Quinte

For a winter activity that’s both peaceful and thrilling, try ice fishing in PEC’s world-renowned fishing spots. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a newbie, book a charter on the Bay of Quinte and try your luck for walleye, pike, or perch on the icy waters. The tranquility of the frozen landscape is perfect for a mindful moment. Just be sure to check the Ontario fishing regulations before heading out to ensure you’re fishing within the season and catch limits. Due to fluctuating temperatures, check for safety and ice condition updates before heading out.

Tobogganing Fun

Feeling adventurous? If you’re near some hills, channel your inner kid with a toboggan ride down Delhi Park. Bring your friends or family, and don’t forget a thermos of hot chocolate to keep warm between runs. For safety, always check the hill conditions and watch out for icy patches before you start sliding.

Glide Into Winter

There’s nothing quite like skating under an open sky. When conditions allow, you’ll often find locals clearing small rinks on frozen bays and ponds throughout The County—perfect for a casual game of shinny or a peaceful skate at sunset. Always check ice thickness and weather updates before heading out, especially after warm spells.

For a more predictable option, Parsons Brewing outdoor rink welcomes families and friends alike for shinny hockey on Fridays or family skating on weekends. Prefer a private experience? The rink can also be booked for group gatherings or celebrations. Afterwards, warm up indoors with Parsons’ craft brews and hearty menu offerings—making it a perfect combo of outdoor activity and local flavour.

Snowy Day Escapes

Looking for something different on a snowy day? Head to The Golf Simulator at The Golf Studio in Picton for an indoor escape where you can practice your swing while staying warm.
