Step inside some of Prince Edward County's most charming homes this holiday season and discover how a beloved Christmas tradition is helping preserve The County's architectural heritage.
There's something magical about a home dressed for the holidays. Twinkling lights, festive greenery, beautifully decorated rooms and the warmth of a welcoming doorway. Now imagine getting to experience all of that inside some of Prince Edward County's most intriguing homes.
On December 6, 2026, the Christmas in the County House Tour invites visitors to do just that, offering a rare opportunity to explore eight to ten beautifully decorated homes during a self-guided holiday tour.
It's a chance to admire unique architecture, gather a little decorating inspiration and experience a festive County tradition. But behind those decorated doors is a story that goes well beyond Christmas.
A Peek Inside The County's Most Charming Homes
Every year, the Christmas in the County House TourCommittee brings together a collection of exceptional homes, each with its own character and story.
Some are historic properties filled with architectural details that have stood the test of time. Others are newer homes that offer their own take on distinctive County living. What connects them is their unique character and the care their owners put into decorating for the season.
Part of the fun is the element of surprise. The participating homes and their locations are kept under wraps until tickets are purchased, giving visitors something new to discover each year.
With a map in hand, guests can explore at their own pace, enjoying festive decorations, warm cider and homemade cookies along the way.
It's a holiday outing that offers a glimpse behind doors you might otherwise only admire from the street.
How a Lost Landmark Inspired a County Tradition
While the house tour is known for its festive atmosphere, its beginnings are rooted in a shared passion for preserving Prince Edward County's built heritage.
In 2010, five local women came together following the demolition of a historic Methodist church on Picton's Main Street. The loss of the 135-year-old building had sparked community concern about the future of other historic properties across The County.
Rather than simply mourn what had been lost, the group decided to do something to help protect what remained.
Their idea was simple: invite people inside some of The County's most beautiful homes during the Christmas season and use the proceeds to support local heritage preservation.
That first year, the organizers hoped to sell 200 tickets. Many even opened their own homes to help make the inaugural tour possible.
What began as a grassroots fundraising idea has since grown into a much-loved annual holiday tradition.
A Holiday Tradition That Gives Back
Today, the Christmas in the County House Tour welcomes approximately 400 ticket holders each year, with proceeds supporting The County's Built Heritage Fund.
Over the years, the tour has helped contribute to preservation projects at several recognizable local landmarks, including the Regent Theatre, St. Mary Magdalene Church, Glenwood Cemetery Chapel and Black River Chapel.
It's a reminder that preserving heritage isn't just about protecting old buildings. It's about keeping the places, stories and architectural details that make Prince Edward County distinctive part of its future.
And for visitors, it means that a festive day exploring beautiful homes can also contribute to the community that makes the experience possible.
